Clinical Research

Cancer Research Network, Inc. (CRN) was founded by Charles L. Vogel, MD, an acknowledged world’s expert in breast cancer, in 1997 as a way to provide his patients with cutting-edge cancer care by offering them treatment options through clinical trials. The unique structure of CRN as a private, non-profit Site Maintenance Organization (SMO) allowed Dr. Vogel and affiliated physicians to access clinical trials, both government and industry sponsored, in a quicker manner than most larger institutions. The success of CRN became apparent when the organization began to be the top, if not one of the top accruers in national breast cancer studies. Overtime, CRN grew to include other physician practices and institutions both locally and beyond. Although CRN has historically been well defined by its breast oncology research program, we have been striving to offer patients with other types of cancer the same opportunities. The success of our network has enabled us to offer physicians and their patient’s access to the same quality clinical trials offered by major institutions throughout the country without having to consider extensive travel while managing their disease. Since our inception, we have managed over 80 clinical trials and more than 1000 study participants. The unique nature of CRN has created an organizational philosophy of true compassion amongst the staff and volunteers for our cause.  We “BELIEVE” that every cancer patient has hope through the strides clinical research is making every day.

Dr. Vogel currently serves as Scientific Director for CRN. We rely on his dedication and expertise in the world of breast oncology research to dictate which trials are on the cutting-edge of science and in which breast trials CRN will participate. Other community- based physicians in the network with different areas of oncology expertise guide CRN’s expansion into other cancer research programs.

Education

Knowledge is Power and Power Brings Change.

Currently, only 3% of adult cancer patients participate in clinical trials. At this rate, new advances in cancer care will take even longer to be realized. Clinical research is the only way to obtain important data that moves new drugs and therapies toward FDA approval and more expanded use here in the USA. Physicians, along with the gold standard of care, may offer their patients the option to participate in a clinical trial if available for their situation. Ultimately, it is up to the patient to decide and the numbers are clear that most choose the gold standard. This may be attributed to many different factors one of which may be a lack of understanding or fear of the unknown. CRN has found that not only patients with disease but healthy community members as well need to be educated about research. It is apparent that clinical research in general carries many myths which need to be dispelled if we are ever to make the next great discovery in cancer treatment and perhaps one day, a cure.  By spreading knowledge about clinical research CRN hopes to provide the community with a clear picture of this important element of scientific advancement.

In looking toward the overall well-being of our community members, we conduct free educational forums for patients and their loved ones, as well as continuing education accredited events for physicians.

Advocacy/Community Outreach

Cancer Research Network, Inc. strives to help cancer patients manage their fight from diagnosis to survivorship. Coping with the physical and mental effects of a cancer diagnosis and treatment can be overwhelming for patients and their loved ones. Managing the many aspects of their care can compromise quality of life beyond the apparent effects of treatment. CRN has a strong desire to reach out to these patients and help alleviate such burdens that although customary, put an added strain on their ability to focus on their well-being. We also look to support survivors once they have come through their fight.
